ACTION ALERT - Protect Elder Parole

Heidi • April 8, 2025

Tell the CA Senate Safety Committee to vote NO on SB 286!

Felony Murder Elimination Project URGENTLY calls on our supporters to take action today! Senate Bill 286 is being heard in the California Senate Public Safety Committee today, and the time is now to take urgent action and urge the Senate Public Safety Committee to protect elder parole by OPPOSING SB 286 ahead of their vote.

SB 286 seeks to exclude people of first and second degree murder as well as those convicted of various sex offenses from California’s Elderly Parole program. If SB 286 were to pass, it would decimate California’s Elderly Parole program, given that the majority of people serving life sentences who are eligible have murder convictions.

SB 286 attacks a modest, yet helpful and necessary geriatric parole program in California that brought compassion, common sense and fiscal responsibility to our prison system during the height of California’s mass incarceration crisis. With strong law enforcement and victim advocates support pressuring Democratic legislators to pass SB 286, it is critical for us to make it clear to the legislature that we OPPOSE this harmful bill. Opposing SB 286 is an opportunity for legislators to take a stand against tough on crime policies in service of real public safety.

SB 286 will not advance public safety for Californians but will instead lead to irresponsible state spending and more human suffering.

You can take action by calling/emailing legislators, showing up to give a 'me neither,' and sharing the Action Toolkit widely across your social media channels.

Thank you all in advance for your work to stop this harmful bill!

Almost 600 US federal and state prisons are located within three miles of EPA Superfund Sites. As such, incarcerated people are often assigned to work for the industries that fuel climate change, performing hazardous work with little to no training while earning slave wages.

In New Hampshire, there is a strict three-year deadline to file a motion for a new trial, regardless when new exonerating evidence is discovered. Senate Bill 141 would create room for exceptions and allow the wrongfully convicted to file a motion after three years if there is newly discovered evidence.
