ACTION ALERT - Governor Jared Polis; Bring Robin Farris Home

Heidi • December 19, 2022

If sentenced today under Colorado felony murder laws, Robin would have been eligible for parole over a decade ago

At age 61, Robin Farris is the 3rd longest serving woman imprisoned in Colorado's Department of Corrections system. She’s a mother, grandma, and a beautiful soul, known as a beloved bright light in her community. Like almost all incarcerated women, Robin experienced significant trauma that shaped her life. During her 30 years of incarceration, she lost her parents, brother, and other family members, as well as the attorney who oversaw her appeals.

Currently, Robin is serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole for a felony murder conviction. In 2021, the Colorado State Legislature reduced penalties for felony murder, but these reduced penalties did not apply retroactively. If sentenced under today's laws, Robin would've been eligible for parole over a decade ago. She filed for clemency with former Governor John Hickenlooper after being prompted to do so by the former Governor himself. Robin filed with her hopes up, not only for freedom, but to spend time with her very sick father before he passed. However, she was not granted clemency.

While incarcerated, Robin has been a role model to the women in her facility. She's obtained numerous certificates and degrees, maintained the same job for over a decade and has not been written up since 1999. She's acted as a mentor to the women of DWCF

While incarcerated Robin has been a model inmate and a role model to the women in her facility. She has obtained numerous certificates and degrees. She has maintained the same job for over a decade and has remained write-up free since 1999. She has been appointed as a mentor to the women of the Denver Women's Correctional Facility for many years by staff through multiple programs, and has a multitude of support letters from staff and volunteers alike.

If granted, Robin would be the first black woman in Colorado's history to receive clemency. We are asking Governor Jared Polis to grant Robin Farris clemency and change the trend of overlooking black women in Colorado's criminal justice system. We also ask Governor Polis to allow a woman who's used her incarceration to improve her life and the lives of other incarcerated women to do the same back in a community of those who love her.

The petition "Bring Robin Farris home" at Change.org has 1,331 of 1,500 needed signatures. Please add your name to help Robin come home.
