Heidi • November 18, 2024

Help act in person & virtually to urge the LA City Council to pass the Sanctuary Ordinance

Tomorrow, Tuesday, November 19th, the Los Angeles City Council will be voting on the Sanctuary Ordinance.

We urge our followers and supporters to join CIPC (California Immigrant Policy Center), CHIRLA (Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights), SEIU-721, Central American Resource Center (CARECEN), Garment Worker Center, National Day Laborer Organizing Network (NDLON), Clean Carwash Worker Center, SEIU-USWW, South Asian Network, Thai Community Development Center, Public Counsel and immigrant justice advocates in a coalition urging the Los Angeles City Council to pass the Sanctuary Ordinance.

The Sanctuary Ordinance would protect immigrant communities by prohibiting the use of City resources, property and personnel from being used for immigration enforcement.

Action Steps:

  1. Use the Action toolkit, which includes instructions and talking points.
  2. Come to LA City Hall (200 N. Spring Street, Los Angeles, CA) for a Press Conference at 830a PT and give public comment at 10am PT.
  3. Call in to provide public comment.
  4. Submit written public comment.
  5. Share this information on your social media channels (and your organization's social media accounts if you can speak on its behalf) on why you support the Sanctuary Ordinance.

With the undeniable rise of anti-immigrant rhetoric, misinformation targeting immigrant communities, and the real threat of detention and deportation, enacting and supporting sanctuary cities is more important than ever. Sanctuary cities exist from coast to coast and promote the ideals of human rights, separation of local and federal law, and empowerment of communities to grow with the help of immigrants. These cities promote human rights, community empowerment, and the separation of local and federal law, while helping to reduce crime rates, strengthen economies, and create a more trusting relationship between immigrants and law enforcement.
