FMEP Board Member and Founder Honored by The Davis Vanguard

The Vanguard Awards honor the work of individuals and groups on behalf of criminal justice reform, decarceration, anti-racism, and other social justice efforts.

Felony Murder Elimination Project Board Member and Founder Joanne Scheer will be honored by The Davis Vanguard at their 13th annual Vanguard Justice Awards Gala on October 19th in Sacramento, California. The annual gala and fundraiser honors the work of individuals and groups on behalf of criminal justice reform, decarceration, anti-racism, and other social justice efforts. The keynote speaker will be Alex Vitale, the author of The End of Policing.


Scheer was nominated for and will receive the Vanguard's Civil Rights Award, honoring an individual’s overall achievement in the area of criminal and/or social justice reform.


Scheer's statement:


"I am so very honored to be awarded the Civil Rights Award by The Davis Vanguard this year! It is incredible to be recognized by such a respected publication that has helped make our work possible. It is an honor to be included with remarkable Justice Award winners Senator Steven Bradford, Tony Serra, Cristine Soto DeBerry, Philip Melendez, Franky Carrillo, Juliana Drous, Xochitl Lairos, Danielle Harris, and Jesse Vasquez."


The proceeds from the event will help to fund the Vanguard Court Watch and Vanguard Incarcerated Press, featuring the voices of those incarcerated.
