Artist and activist Shepard Fairey created the Barack Obama Hope and Kamala Harris Forward posters

Artist and activist Shepard Fairey’s Studio Number One worked with California Assembly candidate Franky Carrillo on a campaign poster for Carrillo’s run to represent District 52 in Los Angeles County. Credited for creating the original artwork is the design team at Studio Number One and creative directed by Shepard Fairey. The poster will become the image of the campaign’s get-out-the-vote effort to educate the public on this historic race, as Franky Carrillo could become the first exoneree elected to the California State Assembly.

Discussing his support of Franky Carrillo, Fairey said, “Democracy takes engagement before, during, and after the election. My work to democratize art is intended to inspire people to learn about the candidates and take action on the issues that matter. In this case, Franky Carrillo is a leader with a singular perspective on our justice system and marginalized communities, having served 20 years for a crime he didn't commit. He has the personal experience and dedication to shape lasting reform where we need it.”

Carrillo responded, “When prolific, contemporary artist Shepard Fairey weighs in on an issue, it means something and carries real weight in our culture and consciousness. His 2015 street-art campaign, The Stamp of Incarceration, raised awareness about mass incarceration and the formerly incarcerated, who deserve a chance to rise above their past and make a difference for the future, for themselves and others in the community. I thank him for his support of my candidacy and for creating such a beautiful, moving image for my campaign.”

In his personal capacity, Shepard Fairey formally endorsed Franky Carrillo, joining the many activists and leaders supporting the criminal justice reformer for his dedication to social justice and human rights.

Felony Murder Elimination Project also supports Franky Carrillo in his race to represent district 52 in the California State Assembly. Carrillo served as a Commissioner on the L.A. County Probation Commission, and is a Senior Policy Advisor for the L.A. Innocence Project at Cal State Los Angeles. Carrillo’s story is featured in Netflix’s “The Innocence Files.” as he served 20 years in prison for a crime he did not commit and was exonerated in 2011. We deeply believe that the voices of those who are system-impacted are vitally important to creating and advocating for a fairer criminal justice system, yet are the voices that are most often silenced.

We're approaching 30 days until the November 5th election. Ballots will soon be mailed out to Californians starting next Monday. Now is the time to vote in legislators who share our beliefs and values.
