Interfaith Communities United for Justice & Peace hosts forum featuring SB 94

Felony Murder Elimination Project and the Drop LWOP Coalition invite our supporters and advocates to join us at Friday Forum, a weekly event hosted by Interfaith Communities United for Justice & Peace (ICUJP).

This Friday, March 1st from 730am to 930am Pacific Time, the Friday Forum features discussion about the Drop LWOP Coalition and SB 94, a legislative priority and sponsored by Felony Murder Elimination Project and the Drop LWOP Coalition. SB 94 - Judicial Review of Old Sentences, authored by Senator Dave Cortese (SD15), would allow judges to review some individuals serving life without parole for offenses committed before June 6, 1990, and who have served at least 25 years of their sentence. Members of the Drop LWOP Coalition will explain the importance of this bill in more detail and talk through ways ICUJP can help.

Featured Speakers are:

Elisa Baier with the Drop LWOP Coalition, a group of organizations working to end Life Without Parole sentencing in California.

Joanne Scheer, founder of the Felony Murder Elimination Project. Joanne's only child, Anthony, was convicted of first-degree murder under the felony murder rule and sentenced to life in prison with no possibility of parole under the felony murder special circumstances law. Even though Anthony did not harm, or intend to harm, anyone, he was sentenced to die in prison.

The myth of “superhuman strength;" a descriptor often applied to Black people in police use-of-force cases, dates back to Reconstruction. When “superhuman strength” is allowed as a use-of-force justification in court cases, dehumanizing misconceptions and stereotypes make their way into the wider criminal justice system.
