Support Adrienne's Family After Preventable Death at CCWF

Fundraiser aims to help family with funeral services and obtain an independent autopsy to investigate Adrienne's death

Just last week, we addressed the impact of climate change and global warming dangers on prison populations.

Unfortunately, it rarely takes long for the hypothetical to become reality.

On July 6th, 2024, amidst a deadly heat wave across California, the Drop LWOP community tragically lost Adrienne Boulware, affectionately known as “Twin.” Adrienne was a 47-year-old mother, grandmother, and beloved community member incarcerated at the Central California Women’s Facility (CCWF) in Chowchilla.

This fundraiser is being organized by Adrienne’s daughters, grandchildren and extended family in partnership with Drop LWOP Coalition member California Coalition for Women Prisoners (CCWP). All donations will go directly to Adrienne’s family who urgently need funds for an independent autopsy to investigate her death, as well as for funeral services.

Despite temperatures topping 114°F in California’s Central Valley, and officials urging the utmost caution with heat related illness, the prison failed to implement even the most basic heat precautions to protect people’s lives. While we grieve the heartbreaking, unexpected loss of Adrienne from a fully preventable heat stroke, we will continue to fight the inhumane conditions that led to her death.

“It was heat exhaustion. She got into the shower to cool off and became incoherent, looking off and not responding when roommates were asking her if she was okay. She dropped to the ground and her legs started shaking and wouldn’t stop… I’m hearing she had heart failure at the hospital and passed Saturday July 6th at approximately 2 am,” said an incarcerated woman inside CCWF who wishes to remain anonymous to avoid retaliation.

Felony Murder Elimination Project humbly asks our supporters and advocates to please visit the Go Fund Me "Support Adrienne’s Family After Her Preventable Death" page and support Adrienne’s four daughters and eleven grandchildren, and share this fundraiser far and wide. If you are unable to donate, you can help as much by spreading word of the fundraiser on your social media channels.

You can also read the CCWP Statement on the tragic, and again, wholly preventable loss of Adrienne's life, "CCWP Calls for Immediate Public Health Investigation Into Preventable Heatstroke Death at CCWF Women’s Prison" on the organization's website.

Always and with gratitude, we thank you all for your support in our work, your advocacy for a fairer criminal justice and carceral system, and providing a voice to the voiceless.

Nearly every single solution to the prison understaffng crisis adds to the problem and creates the cyclical spiral mentioned above. Few consider the biggest factor; mass incarceration. rA report from Prison Policy Initiative examines why raises, benefits, and new facilities haven't turned recruitment around, and what that informs about the state of mass incarceration.

Across the nation, schools often implement harsh punishments that push students out of school and into the juvenile justice system, perpetuating school-to-prison pipeline. Organizations like Dignity In Schools Campaign - California aim to dismantle that pipeline through local grassroots action.

Prison libraries are often under-resourced, strictly regulated, with limited and outdated selections of books. The Appalachian Prison Book Project is running a fundraiser (until December 7th) where you can sponsor an incarcerated reader and directly support incarcerated people reading inside.

Re-entry is fraught with enough challenges. Adding to it, a Cal Matters report found the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitations shorted many people leaving prison "Gate Money," as required by California state law, since 1994.

Wired Magazine reports that ICE is soliciting plans to expand its digital surveillance system ahead of the plan mass deport millions of undocumented immigrants. Civil and criminal justice rights organizations see no reason to believe that's where the scope of use will end.
